One of my favorite things to do at Christmas time is to cozy up with a mug of good hot chocolate with lots of peppermint candy canes added in (of course sitting near the Christmas tree or a nice warm fire helps too). I will either grind up a couple of candy canes to add to the hot chocolate or use one or two peppermint sticks to stir the hot chocolate until it melts. The King Leo Brand soft peppermint sticks have been at the top of the list until this year! Unfortunately, I discovered they are made in Mexico.
So I have been searching for a Made in the USA replacement…….
But I wanted to find traditional peppermint flavored candy canes. I checked 2 local grocery stores, and I found mostly made in Mexico candy canes there as well. I did find Hammond’s candy canes (pictured at the top) but in flavors such as strawberry and carmel apple.
Also, I found a Made in the USA 2 lb peppermint candy stick from a company, Atkinson’s in Lufkin, Texas. (This is the closest that I came to finding a traditional made in America candy cane).
And finally at a Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft store, I found the Cinnabon brand flavored candy canes that were Made in the USA.
On a positive note–I found various other Made in the USA candies such as Junior Mints Peppermint Crunch and Candy Cane Pop Drops from the Tootsie Roll company at Target. Chocolate and assorted candy from the Signature Chocolate brand and Russell Stover brand at the grocery stores. I also found various Peeps at Jo-Anns that were labeled Made in the USA.
Unfortunately, I never did find Made in the USA candy canes. I am sure there have to be some out there…………. If anyone knows where I can purchase some before the holidays, please let me know, otherwise I will be taking a hammer to the 2 lb stick!
